WLRN Latin America Roundtable
Join The Sunshine Economy: the Americas and Miami, Monday morning at 9 am on WLRN 91.3 FM for a discussion of the region whose impact on South Florida's economic future is more important than ever -- but which is increasingly distancing itself from the U.S. There was a time in South Florida when Latin America meant Cuba and a trade embargo. But these days Latin America means a trade explosion with an entire hemisphere: Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Peru and especially Brazil. Still, all that thriving commerce comes against the backdrop of changing relations between Latin America and the U.S. The region's new economic and diplomatic clout has encouraged its leaders to challenge Washington's influence -- and welcome China's presence -- as never before. That has many wondering if this will be the Century of the Americas...or the moment when the decades-old dream of north-south integration burns out like an old Cuban cigar. Host Tom Hudson speaks with veteran Latin America correspondent Tim Padgett and Colombian Ambassador Carlos Urrutia as well as such experts as Bruce Bagley of the University of Miami, Robert Pastor of American University, NPR's Lourdes Garcia-Navarro, Carol Wise of the University of Southern California and Miami Herald columnist Andres Oppenheimer. Be a part of the conversation here!
